UMNO unprepared to change

The big question of whether any new leadership in UMNO will do better than Badawi is answered in the negative by many commentators -as in this one by Malaysian Insider. This argument follow on to argue that Mar 8th election results is a beginning of an irreversible decline of UMNO/BN and its racialist ideology. The argument focus on the undeniable negative aspects of UMNO/BN. Could there be any possiblity for a reformed UMNO-we need to look in other directions to look for these elements. The positive elements must come together fast enough before UMNO/BN is gone for ever:

The PM cum UMNO President has been asked to `expedite' `transition of power'-or in plane language-he has been asked to leave/get lost ASAP! Watch out: The next 12 hours will see some dramatic announcements! A number of scenarios are possible:

1. Badawi may try to play his delaying tactics-but time is running out. There may even be a timetable already set. And he has no choice on his succesor -Najib has already been named in the `deal' to give Badawi the temprory support. So he may indeed choose to announce it at earliest possible time eg the next Cabinet meeting on Friday. If this happen there will certainly be a speedy Cabinet reshuffle under new PM Najib.This is a pro-Najib scenario. Other possible scenarios:

2. he may call for an UMNO Emergency Meeting-which will give him more time -and some more options to prepare for his unavoidable exit eg a big retirement package ala Mahathir(who went to South Pole on public expense!), or a UMNO Youth Chief position for his SIL.This scenario may give a platform to Razaleigh to explore an option other than what Najib can offer;

3. The more radical option would be : if he feel really pissed off: he resign from his MP position -forcing a by-election!!! Or a threat to this effect may hold off some pressure from those in UMNO/Najib's faction. In any case his days as UMNO President & PM are numbered. Some bloggers even postulate that he may cross over to join Anwar, and bring down the BN govenment ....if he still has resolve to make a splash before his exit. Politics is the arts of the possible. Watch out!

Lookng back: he has been provoked to hit back at his opponents -and the `blame his critics' response was too little too late. Nothing fatal was delivered to substantiate the counter criticisms. The rejection of his explantion set the stage for his exit-which played out in the subsequent visits to the various states to face unfriendly rebuke and call for resignations from the divisional war lords. Even the Parliamentarians support could not help to resuscitate his fading aura as a PM.

The PC after meeting UMNO Johor 2 days ago (Friday) was probably deemed to have not gone far enough to spell out his impending exit -he only hinted broadly that he will not PM for `too long'-thus the need for a clarification by the UMNO Johor spokeperson that PM has `won' their support through a `step-down-orderly-soon' deal. Now: how soon do the UMNO warlords want?

The more important issue is: what changes will the new PM bring -whoever that may be.

Call To Expedite Transition Of Power

JOHOR BAHARU, April 13 (Bernama) -- The plan for transition of power from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak should be expedited in an orderly manner to ensure that the people are not left wondering about it, Johor Umno information chief Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said today.

Muhyiddin who said UMNO's crisis is only in the eyes of the few beholders now make a significant concession that the crisis is indeed more than just a problems of the few eyes. The `UMNO leadership crisis' come from his mouth now:

MALVU.org has been down for the last couple of years due to some problems including technical issues. For whatever reason it had become very slow. We couldn't identify the cause -and to avoid receiveing more complaints of that nature we had stopped updating the web site. However the mission of the web site is getting ever more relevant as proven by the results from the last general elections-which we missed. With a new scenario after the elections we face another situation where the need for monitoring the power that be become even more important: the winning of the election by PKR-DAP-PAS/ Pakatan Rakyat now mean that power relationships have become more complicated and put ever higher demand for objectivity, rationality and vigour in news reporting and analysis. This is a change for the better-we should all welcome it. We will be back to provide the kind of updated analysis and reporting from voters' perspectives soon !

I had attended a mini workshop about the issue of race, recently. There were a lot of familiar questions popped up during the workshop that lasted for only 2 hours. As I said, it is a familiar topic that circulating my years of receiving education, starting from primary school until now. However there was a drastic change of the content of the topic.

MACHAP: Wild-wild West in voters' land

Machap by-election had shown the `wild' face of Malaysian election : election laws are broken with impunity eg Koh Tsu Koon with a `clean' image feeding voters -for what ? Votes buying in full swing eg RM3mil was given away by Najib to Felda voters; Government vehicles are everwhere eg Information Ministry's vehicles have been parking all over the place; Uni students came under surveilance again -with vehicles from 3 unis spotted in the vicinities; Abuse of power by politicians eg A newbie deputy minister Liow Tion Lai brought 2 newly minted badminton heros to promote badminton to Macap ! RTM has been staging shows to even a few spectators in a vain attempt to draw voters away from the political ceramahs-1 of the few channels left to voters to get election information etc etc.

Pak Lah is at it again : if youa re clean -don't be scared. So he said. So why is he not willing to set the ACA free as an independent body answerable to the Parliament ? Right now the PM himself stnad in the way of such a positive and fearless change. Under current system the sandiwara is getting interesting: last time when Pak Lah said no one is above the laws -it was after Mongolian women Altantunya was found blown to pieces by C4 explosives. The message seems to be directed at his political rival speculated to be behind the explosion. Then how times change :

Election boycot cowardly-winning by unfree & unfair means even more cowardly !

The PM -the most distinguished son of Penang, repeated the criticism of the poll boycot by the Opposition at Batu Talam by-election as `cowardly' ie the Opposition stayed away must be explained by them being `scared to lose'. From a survey of electoral cowardice we can however see that maintaining unfree and unfair election systems in Malaysia to keep a party in power for closed to 50 years sounds much more cowardly ! Whether the boycot can `convince' the ruling parties and Election Commission to improve the electoral standards in Malaysia it appears that true courage is needed to boycott the election ! Afterall they had put up good fights in almost all previous elections despite the handicaps they faced.
Already some unfair practices rear their ugly heads in the by-election : government allocation to a Chinese school had been announced to fish for Chinese votes; electoral rolls are not cleared of dead voters -which can run into 5% -well over the winning margins in many constituencies ! More are coming -just switch on the TVs -you will see only the ruling party candidates -but the Independent candidate is almost non-existent !

The height of cowardice must be the cancellation of local government elections which was caused by a real scare of the ruling parties in losing the elections. And they did lose big time when the local elections were practiced !

Independent loathed from all sides -what happened to right to contest ?

It seems that independent candidates nowsaday are getting the brit brats -which actually prove the point of being independent ! Look: BN's Najib claimed that the independent is a ploy by the Opposition to gauge the BN's support among Malays. But why are you scared of that ? In fat if the independent candidate get more than the last PAS candidate it would be an earthquake for BN/UMNO as much as it will be for PAS to explain their `support' among the Malay voters ! it means that the independent's winning threshold is the 2000+ votes PAS got last time -whether he won over the UMNO candidate or not ! Knowing this the Opposition's opposition to the independent candidate may be based on non-self-interested reasons like pressuring the EC for fairer election system !

Oon Jaafar's idea of non-communal party -is it time ?

The excuses for rejecting Oon Jaafar's idea of combining all communal parties into policy/ideology based national parties had in the past centred on the idea that the people are not ready yet. But are they ever ? The point here is : are the people able to make the choice -or they just had to make do with what they are offered ? In other words, it is between a supplier or demand market. And democracy is definitely a demand market-you get what the people want. So do the people want non-communal parties ? The question had never been put to the people in a way that the people can make the choices freely. This is where the election boycot by the Opposition parties can make an impact : they should campaign for free and fair elections as understtod by the Election Commission -which touch on curbs on election spending, stopping money politics, abuse of public amenities, unbalanced media coverage etc. Only when we have free and fair elections -then the question of non-communal parties can be put to the people -and then we will truly know if the people had ever chosen communal parties from day 1 !

Election boycot on the card for Opposition

Since the EC admitted that they can't guarantee a free and fair elections under 50-year old election laws what is there for the by-election to do to mitigate against that ? Short of changing the laws immediately the ruling party is caught in a no-win position -going ahead with the election mean they try to play rough with their opponents, while not going ahead will mean giving in to Opposition and EC demand. The ruling party UMNO is really isolated this time ! Updated report has it that even MCA support the change in election law -but based on racial calculations which it says had reduced the proportion of CHinese majority seats.

Batu Talam inadequate test of BN's policies

Many political commentators would like people to believe that the coming batu Talam by-election would be a test of BN's popularity specifically its policy to increase tolls and others essentials. But sad to say the fact would not back up such a wishful thinking. The dumping of mountainous Ringgit onto the 10 000 voters will ensure that the voters are not paying enough attention to the national issues -afterall the rubber tappers and other farmers who dominate the area in Pahang are not frequent visitors of the national capital where the relevant tolls are located. The real reflectors of reception of local and national policies are the local elections-which are sadly lacking in Malaysia. Without that the ruling parties just carry on unpopular policies without regards to the people's sentiments. But from experiences elsewhere local elections results always are precursors of voting trends at state and federal levels. Eg in Algeria the anti-military voting trend at local government levels caused the frightened military to suspend all elections ! They however did not go as far as here to suspend/abolish the local elections altogether and go for appointed local governments -as happened in Malaysia !

Outdated electoral laws can't ensure free & fair elections in Malaysia!

Election Commission chief made news when he confessed that the 50-year old electoral laws are inadequate to ensure free & fair elections in Malaysia. Opposition parties hammered him while happily agreed to his proposal to amend the laws. The ruling UMNO is the one put on the spot when the EC semingly pressure them and push them to a corner. So will an independent commission be formed afterall ? Precedents : the EC Chief has not been acting strangely when he made these suggestions to change -he had suggested other changes eg automatic registration of voters etc before -but back down with the slightest of rebuke from the ruling parties. The same thing may happen again. But the PM is also known to be happy to appoint independent commission on certain grave issues eg Police's misconduct. Then he walked away from their recommendation ie the IPCMC's fate is a good/bad example. So the shows go on -but to be pro-active the voters should pressure the government to act now-before the next general election is due !

The statistics are out on developers who have been found guilty by the Housing Tribunal-but the reason why this tribunals can't expand beyond Kl remain a mystery. The lack of confidence of the citizens against the justice system in the country is well supported by various inexplicable but simple implementation (or lack of it) of some measures which proved to be effective to weed out the rule-breaking industry players. Enforcement officers are often short handed-compared to service charges collection counters. Errant developers get used to act above the laws -and the returning of the same parties to power ensure that the same rotten system continue. Solution : choose another party/ies to run the government/country !

Pak Lah's `happiness' with `achievements' in 3 years cause for worries

Pak Lah's reported happiness with his achievements in 3 years (appended) is cause for worries : with his anti-graft campaign practically abandoned his `happiness' almost read like `happiness' over lying to the people ! It also embarass apologists of Pak Lah's regime who had excused Pak Lah's lack of achevments in anti-graft campaign and other integrity reforms on Pak Lah's lack of control over UMNO. But Pak Lah is already `happy' with what goes on now ! What to say ??? Another report which reported Pak Lah as saying that accusations of nepotism is only to bring him down -forgetting that he had earlier said he welcome criticisms. He forget that he should clear the air over his close relations' making millions since his ascendancy as PM of Malaysia -not to distract the issue by questioning political motives of the accusers. If he persist very soon there will be no one left to criticise him/his regime anymore !Is that his ideal society ???
